One of the largest rice producers in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul has been suffering from heavy rains, which has hampered agricultural production. This scenario has caused concern among consumers, but the Government of Minas Gerais rules out any shortage of the product.

According to the State, at the moment there is no “scenario of shortages” of the product in Minas and that it is still too early to make an assessment of how the situation will affect Minas Gerais production or economy.

The government emphasizes that around 80% of the rice crop has already been harvested, which would still guarantee the food supply for a period in Minas.

Despite the state’s lack of concern, some supermarkets have already begun to limit purchases of the product. At the BH Supermercado unit, on Rua dos Pampas, in the Prado neighborhood, West Region of the capital, customers can buy a maximum of five packages.

In a note, the chain informed that the measure aims to discourage consumers from taking unnecessary stock, which could result in unjustified shortages of the product.

At the Epa supermarket, in Santa Luzia, in the Metropolitan Region, the customer has access to a maximum of two packages.

The state of Rio Grande do Sul continues to be punished by heavy rains that hit at least 401 cities, including the capital Porto Alegre. Due to the chaotic scenario, the Senate approved this Tuesday (7) the Legislative Decree Project that recognizes the state of calamity in Rio Grande do Sul until December 31, 2024.

The Government of Minas Gerais informed that it remains attentive to the Federal Government’s deliberations on the topic.
