The ruralist bench presented a bill on environmental reciprocity that prohibits Brazil from proposing or signing international agreements in which the country is required to adopt tougher measures in the environmental area than those complied with by the other signatories. The project is under the rapporteurship of Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MT) in the Senate Environment Committee and was presented by deputy Tião Medeiros (PP) in the Chamber two weeks ago, with the support of parliamentarians from MDB, PSD, Republicans and PL . A public hearing is expected to take place in the coming days.

Former president of the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Tião Medeiros states that Brazil already complies with stricter environmental rules, for example, than European Union countries, and that there is a need for “fair and isonomic treatment” that does not punish national producers. “The measure would help prevent situations in which Brazilian exports are unduly penalized by environmental measures that are more stringent or arbitrary compared to those applied in other markets,” he said.
