CBF postpones matches of women’s and men’s teams from Rio Grande do Sul until May 27

-

The Rio Grande do Sul football teams, both men and women, will not take the field for the national championships organized by the CBF until May 27th. The postponement of the games was announced this Tuesday (7) by the entity, “due to the state of public calamity in Rio Grande do Sul, decreed by the federal and state governments, resulting from the extreme weather events that occurred”. According to the state’s Civil Defense, 388 municipalities, out of a total of 497 cities, were affected by the storms that hit the state since the beginning of last week. To date, 90 deaths have been recorded due to the rains.ebc.gif?id=1593869&o=node

The decision applies to the men’s teams in Series A, C and D of the Brazilian Championship, in addition to the Copa do Brasil and Brasileiro-Under 20. In the women’s game, matches are suspended in the three divisions of the Brasileirão and also in the Brasileiro Under 20. Check it out HERE all tournaments with postponed matches.

The postponement comes one day after the Rio Grande do Sul Football Federation asked the CBF to suspend, for 20 days, all games involving clubs from Rio Grande do Sul, whether visiting or home.

“The CBF, as the organizing entity of national competitions, and attentive to its institutional functions, as well as the humanitarian effort that the moment demands, reaffirms its unrestricted support to the authorities so that all measures and actions are adopted for the benefit of the population of Rio Grande do Sul , whose help is the top priority”, says the statement.

The entity had already postponed the games of teams from Rio Grande do Sul in the last round. Since then, floods have taken over several cities in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, culminating in the closure of Salgado Filho Airport for at least a month, due to flooding in the area.

Clubs from Rio Grande do Sul that would compete away from home this week in the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana had their matches postponed by the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol). Grêmio would face Huachipato (Chile) and Internacional would visit Real Tomayapo (Bolivia) in the South American Championship.
