The action, residents say, occurred because they were unable to obtain support from the police authorities. The farmers report that, faced with the threat, they mobilized and disarmed the leader and the supposed militiamen who supported the action.

A chromed pistol was seized by the community from these militiamen, and the weapon ended up being later returned by the community for fear of reprisals from the bandits.
Association report

Residents still cite invasions of farmers’ fields.

We live under threat. I’ve been trying to build a house for three years myself, I can’t. We build a field, they come and cut it down. We often arrive at 5am, everything is on the floor. People always arrive and say: ‘you can’t get up’. But why can’t it if this has always been ours?

SSP action and action reduction

The SSP (Public Security Secretariat) of Piauí informed the UOL that Secretary Chico Lucas has already determined that the case be investigated by the PM’s Internal Affairs Department to the General Civil Police Station, to find out if there are police officers involved. An investigation into armed groups has also been opened and is ongoing by the Department for the Repression of Organized Criminal Actions.
