The 2024 edition of the Brazilian Table Football Cup has a record number of entrants and will be held in Recife, on the 18th and 19th of May. In total there will be more than 100 athletes, with the participation of Marcus Ohya from Mato Grosso do Sul.

According to data from Fundesporte (Mato Grosso do Sul Sports and Leisure Foundation), there will be 40 teams representing 15 Brazilian states. The championship takes place at Faculdade Católica Imaculada Conceição in Recife.

Marcus Ohya, from Mato Grosso do Sul, already has a history of victories in table football. Marcus was 9th placed in the gold series 1st division of the Brazil Cup 2023 Fortaleza (CE), champion of the gold series 1st division of the Copa Centro-Oeste 2023 Brasília (DF) and champion of Mato Grosso do Sul 2019.

Also known as button football, table football is inspired by the field style, including goal kicks, throw-ins and corner kicks.

The modality emerged in the late 1920s and according to the Brazilian Table Football Confederation, there are currently 8 modalities: 1 touch (smooth or free button), 3 touches, 12 touches, dice, sectorball, subbuteo and plates. Each has its own rules.

“I obtained a very positive result in Fortaleza, coming in 9th place among 80 competitors from across the country. That was my most important achievement in my career as a table football athlete. I have been preparing a lot with training every week to do well and represent Mato Grosso do Sul with great pride there in Recife”, said Marcus Ohya.
