Last Saturday (4), the State Government delivered the new CT scanner to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of Recife, through the Together for Security program. With the latest generation computed tomography device already in operation to reinforce the work of state security forces, Pernambuco became the first state in the North-Northeast, as well as the sixth in Brazil, to implement a less invasive thanatoscopic examination. Costing R$1.5 million and with a special room prepared to support its use, the equipment was acquired through an agreement with the National Public Security Secretariat (Senasp).

“With this new equipment, a high-resolution tomography will allow for more efficient expertise, guaranteeing less invasive procedures on the body of those who will be examined, more efficient delivery of that person to their family, as well as greater health for the professionals who work here. This contributes to public security and allows for better investigations such as those that occur with the inclusion of equipment like this, within the public security service of the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat”, highlighted Governor Raquel Lyra.

The equipment also assists in the work of IML professionals in defining the causes of deaths, ensuring quality and speeding up investigations. “Pernambuco is taking a leap forward in the quality of examination reports on bodies, which will make it possible, in a way more scientific, more precise, saying whether the cause of death was natural, what the injuries were, how it occurred. This will give us a much better condition to instruct the police investigation”, explained the Secretary of Social Defense, Alessandro Carvalho.

The equipment also provides the possibility of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the body, allowing for a less invasive necropsy and with greater ability to detect details. With this acquisition, computed tomography will be used as a complementary exam and can provide greater effectiveness in technical-scientific activities. Furthermore, it offers greater speed in complex cases and greater efficiency in the analysis of inspected bodies and in the preparation of medical-legal expert reports. “The principle of computed tomography in deceased people involves a triad that goes from professional protection, to diagnostic accuracy of the mechanism of the anatomical injury, and also respect for the deceased person”, recorded Paulo Ferraz, manager of IML Recife.
