Minister Luis Felipe Salomão, from the National Justice Department (CNJ), authorized this Saturday, 4th, the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJ-MG) to transfer almost R$ 10 million to the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul to quickly assist with state emergency situation.

The initiative complies with the CNJ resolution issued last Thursday, 2nd, which allows Brazilian courts to transfer and transfer amounts deposited in court to help the State of Rio Grande do Sul, which, due to the effects of storms in 317 municipalities, already accounts for 55 confirmed deaths and seven others under investigation, which the government says is investigating whether they are related to the meteorological event. In addition, there are 74 missing and 69,000 homeless.

Municipalities with a recognized situation of public calamity, whether by the municipal, state or federal Executive, will have preference to receive the amount. The Rio Grande do Sul General Inspectorate of Justice will be responsible for allocating the amounts transferred to public or private entities, whose beneficiaries provide services of greater social relevance.

The use of the resource, resulting from deposits of pecuniary fines, was requested by the Minas Gerais TJ and met by the CNJ with due accountability.

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), said that the State will need extraordinary reconstruction measures – a kind of “Marshall Plan – after the heavy rains of the last few days, with support of all kinds, without political differences.

Last week, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) promised funds to support Rio Grande do Sul and says he will launch an arm of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) aimed at works on slopes.

O Estadão showed that throughout last year, natural disasters caused loss of R$ 105.4 billion to Brazilaccording to a survey by the National Confederation of Municipalities.
