Complaints about racist crimes became the target of investigations in Paraíso do Tocantins, in the central region of the state, and led to the indictment of three people. In one of the cases, the suspect offended a store employee after her husband was charged for a debt.

The names of the people indicted were not released, so the g1 failed to position the defense.

Three police investigations were concluded this week by the city’s 63rd Police Station. According to the Civil Police, the case happened on December 13, 2023. The woman was with her partner in a business in the Pouso Alegre sector. When paying, she allegedly offended the establishment employee with racist and homophobic statements.

In another incident that was also reported to the Civil Police, a 28-year-old woman went after her 55-year-old ex-partner at his house. During an argument, she made racist insults against the man’s current partner, aged 22. She was not at the house, which is also in Pouso Alegre, but the case reached the authorities.

In April this year, a fight between neighbors in the Vila Regina sector ended up at the police station after a 42-year-old woman used racist speech to offend an 11-year-old child.

Those involved were indicted for the crime of racism, which can lead to a sentence of up to five years in prison. Homophobic statements are also covered by the Racism Law, as it does not yet have its own legislation.

According to delegate José Lucas Melo, responsible for the investigations, the conduct must be held responsible. “The Civil Police is attentive and vigilant in order to investigate and prosecute, if applicable, all people who insist on practicing prejudiced and homophobic conduct in Paraíso and the region,” he said.

According to the general statistics portal of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), until May 2, 2024, eight police reports were registered regarding the practice of discrimination or prejudice based on race or religion in Tocantins. In 2023, there were 34 registrations.

Regarding records of racial insults, this year 21 police reports were registered. Last year there were 85 cases.
