Firefighters from Bahia participate in rescues in Rio Grande do Sul
Faced with this scenario, the government of Bahia sent 22 firefighters, already experienced in operations arising from natural phenomena, to collaborate with the work in the municipality of Caxias do Sul. The agents located three bodies on Friday (3).
“The situation is very delicate. We are acting primarily in places where landslides have occurred, carrying out search and rescue. Our work takes place in conjunction with other fire departments and other bodies such as Civil Defense”, explained Colonel BM Jadson Almeida.
The Bahian military uses an aircraft, as well as quad bikes, to reach some remote areas.
Amid the actions, a dog was also rescued. The animal was alone inside a house, in the district of Galopolis, also in Caxias do Sul.
Rio Grande do Sul declared a state of public calamity on Wednesday (1st), due to “weather events of intense rain”. The decision was published in an extra edition of the Official State Gazette.
The decree highlights that Rio Grande do Sul is hit by intense rains, flooding, hail, floods, floods and high-intensity windstorms, being classified as Level III disasters — characterized by high damage and losses.
The forecast warns of the risk of heavy rain for at least another 36 hours in the region. Therefore, the local government also announced the suspension of classes in the state public network. The measure is valid this Thursday (2) and Friday (3) in schools across the state.
Firefighters sent on other occasions
In 2019, 28 firefighters from Bahia went to Minas Gerais to rescue the victims of the Brumadinho tragedy. On the occasion, agents from the 3rd Group took search equipment, such as thermal cameras and cutting tools, and four traction vehicles, at the request of the Minas Gerais Fire Department.
The rupture of the tailings dam reached the Córrego do Feijão, in Brumadinho (MG). Wherever the mud passed, it left a trail of dirt and missing people. In addition to Vale’s facilities, an inn and some houses were destroyed. In total, 270 people died.
In 2022, the Government of Bahia sent 12 military firefighters to Petrópolis, in Rio de Janeiro, after heavy rains hit the location. The city center was flooded and bodies appeared after the river level fell. There was also a landslide in Morro da Oficina, in the Alto da Serra neighborhood, with at least 80 houses affected.
Firefighters specialized in rescues, burials, flooding, search and rescue in collapsed structures were sent to Petrópolis.
