The Teachers’ Union of the Federal University of Goiás (Adufg-Sindicato) announced that the start of the teachers’ strike at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) will be next Tuesday, 7th. The Adufg-Sindicato informed that it has filed the letter that communicates the strike at the UFG Rectory on the morning of Thursday, 2.

The union’s board of directors launched an indefinite strike last Tuesday (30), following the results of the electronic plebiscite held between April 25 and 30. The result showed that 657 teachers (49.62%) voted in favor of the strike.

But despite joining the national strike of federal education employees, the Adufg-Sindicato highlighted its autonomy in decisions regarding federal education in the state of Goiás. “It is important to highlight that the Adufg-Sindicato is the representative of the category defined and explained in registration in the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE)”, he said in a statement.

The information reflects the university’s position on April 15, when at least 52 universities went on strike as approved by the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes-SN). On that occasion, then, the UFG announced that it would decide internally to be an “autonomous union entity and not a union section”.

Tight decision

The result of the plebiscite showed that the national strike is not unanimous within UFG, as 657 teachers (49.62%) voted in favor of the strike and another 652 (49.24%) were against it. In addition to 15 abstentions. Rosana Borges is a professor at the Faculty of Information and Communication (FIC/UFG) and registered one of the votes against the strike. Even so, the teacher highlighted her respect for the union.

“Although I voted against the strike at this time, the majority decided to strike and I respect democracy and the statute of the Adufg-Sindicato”, he stated.

The union is responsible for mobilizing the strike and informed the Rectory of the teachers’ dissatisfaction with the lack of progress in negotiations with the Federal Government. Furthermore, the Adufg-Sindicato reported that it requested a meeting with the university’s Rectory to adjust what will continue to operate during the strike.

What is known

Federal education employees have been on strike for more than a month and continue strikes across the country. The Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI) has already announced a proposal of 9% from January 2025 for the career restructuring of administrative technicians (TAE). However, the National Union of Basic, Professional and Technological Education Servers (Sinasefe) classified the proposal as “derisory and disappointing”.

The administrative technicians stopped on March 11th. Since then, they began a general strike movement that now includes federal basic education schools and federal institutes of technical and professional education. In addition to membership of federal higher education universities.

The strike by federal education employees has several fronts of demands, one of the main ones being the career restructuring for Education Administrative Technicians. In the case of Adufg-Sindicato, teachers follow the agenda of the Federation of Unions of Teachers and Teachers of Federal Institutions of Higher Education and Basic Technical and Technological Education (Proifes-Fedação), an entity to which it is affiliated.

Proifes-Federation’s main demand is a salary adjustment of 3.5% in 2024, 9.5% in 2025 and 4% in 2026. The entity also calls for the restructuring of careers in Higher Education (MS) and Basic Education, Technical and Technological (EBTT). Therefore, Adufg-Sindicato awaits a response to the counter-proposal that Proifes-Fedação presented to the Federal Government last Tuesday (30).

Technical-administrative

The administrative technicians have been on strike for 44 days and Sinasefe marks 20 days of strike for federal basic education teachers this Tuesday (23). According to the Sinasefe National Strike Command, professionals from 70 union sections joined the strike.

The union already has a membership of 519 units of the Federal Education Network in the 26 states and the Federal District. Check the table with all institutions on the union website. There are cases and cases among universities, as not all of them joined the strike on April 15th.

But the Faculty Association (Aduff-SSind) of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) held simultaneous assemblies in the seven cities where it is present on April 18, three days later. And so it approved teachers’ adherence to the national strike at federal higher education institutions from April 29th.

In addition to a salary increase that varies from 22.71% to 34.32%, depending on the category, employees also ask for restructuring of careers in the technical-administrative and teaching areas; the revocation of “all regulations that harm federal education approved by the Temer and Bolsonaro governments”; as well as the recomposition of the budget and the immediate readjustment of student aid and scholarships.
