The Commission for the Protection of Animals, the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), chaired by state deputy Joana Darc (UB), began the month of May with external actions aimed at the “Yellow May” campaign.

On Thursday (2), the Commission’s employees began a series of “stickers” to raise awareness among drivers in Manaus about their responsibility in traffic in order to avoid running over animals and clarify that failure to provide assistance in the case of being run over of an animal, brings consequences.

For two hours, employees held up banners, distributed booklets, talked to drivers and stuck cars at the traffic lights at the exit of the Eldorado complex, with Avenida Mário Ypiranga, Central South zone.

It was the first of the activities aimed at the campaign, which will also be at other traffic lights on the main roads in Manaus: traffic lights on Avenida Umberto Calderaro (in front of CheckUp Hospital), next Friday (10/5), at 4pm; Manaus Barrier, on Friday (17/5), at 8:30 am; traffic light on Avenida Constantino Nery (in front of Hemoam), at 4pm; and in Ponta Negra, on Wednesday (29/5), at 4pm.

According to Carla Manarte, advisor to the Commission, actions like these help guide drivers to avoid traffic accidents involving animals and what to do in case of accidents.

She informed that it is important for drivers to use defensive driving and drive cautiously to be able to brake if animals cross the road, including in areas marked as wild animal crossings. Furthermore, she emphasized that, when they see an animal crossing the road, they must signal other vehicles to reduce speed and wait for the animal to cross.

“Another important point is that owners must prevent their animals from ‘walking’ around the street, so that they do not get run over and, in the event of such accidents, carefully remove the animal from the place of risk, remembering that it may be in pain and try to bite to protect yourself. You have to wrap it in a blanket or coat, laying it on its right side and taking it to a veterinary clinic to be examined”, he explained.

Yellow May

The international movement “Yellow May” was born with the proposal to raise awareness among the population for safer traffic for everyone, when on May 11, 2011, the United Nations (UN) decreed the Decade of Action for Traffic Safety.

In the context of the animal cause, the movement focused on combating the running over of domestic animals that live on the streets and wild animals that live on the side of highways.

If on the roads wild animals risk their lives when crossing highways, in the city it is no different, given the negligence in helping animals that are victims of being run over by drivers, who often flee without providing assistance.

To combat the running over of animals, state deputy Joana Darc was the author of two Bills related to the safety of animals in traffic that became law: No. 5,038/19, the “Animal Yellow May”, a date created to prevent and combat the running over of animals on public roads in the State and nº 5681/21 on animal abuse, which provides for a fine and administrative sanction for the driver or any other passenger in the vehicle who fails to provide due care to run-over animals.

“The focus of ‘Yellow May’ is to draw the attention of the population and drivers to the high rates of domestic and wild animals being run over on the roads. Something that brings greater traffic safety for animals, drivers and also pedestrians, as it prevents incidents that could be serious for everyone involved”, he highlighted.
