Manaus/AM – Every month, around 23 women in the state of Amazonas die from cervical cancer, according to Mônica Bandeira de Melo, a gynecologist at the Amazonas State Oncology Control Center Foundation (FCecon).

According to a gynecologist, every year more than 200 women die from the disease in the state. The data comes from the Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS-RCP-AM), which also shows data that from January to February 2024, 51 women have already died.

In an interview given to Portal do Holanda during the Hora do H Program, presented by journalist Humberto Amorim, Mônica stated that despite the high incidence of cases in Amazonas, the disease can be 100% prevented through the conization procedure.

“Conization is a small surgery in which we will remove the part of the cervix that is affected by those pre-malignant, pre-cancerous inflammations. [procedimento] It removes that inflammation, preventing women from coming back with cervical cancer in the future,” he said.

The procedure, in turn, will be carried out exclusively by the Cervical Cancer Prevention Center (Cepcolu), which will be attached to the Amazonas State Oncology Control Center Foundation (FCecon). In total, there will be four offices, four operating rooms and an amphitheater for training and courses. The unit will operate from 6am to 7pm.

According to the state government, the unit should be ready by the end of July. With the new center, the number of annual conizations should increase from 550 to 1,100.

Portal do Holanda was founded on November 14, 2005. First with a column, named after its founder, journalist Raimundo de Holanda. Then it moved to Blog do Holanda and finally Portal do Holanda. It was one of the first websites in the State of Amazonas. It is audited by IVC and ComScore.
