Firefighters mobilize task force to operate in cities in the Midwest of SC

The Santa Catarina Fire Department activated three task force teams to operate in the cities of Piratuba and Capinzal, in the Midwest. The cities were the hardest hit by rain in the last 48 hours, with accumulations exceeding 200 millimeters — equivalent to 200 liters of water per square meter.

The task forces come from Joaçaba, São Miguel do Oeste and Xanxerê. Teams from Curitibanos, Rio do Sul, Lages, Canoinhas and Chapecó are on standby in case of need.

Firefighters also monitor the Uruguay River, in the Far West. An action in Itapiranga guides residents who live along the rivers to remove their belongings in time, if necessary.

— We ask that the population pay attention to warnings, seek information on official government channels and respect the guidelines of not crossing floodwaters as the priority must always be life — reinforced the General Commander of the Fire Department, Colonel Fabiano Bastos das Neves .

To date, firefighters have already carried out 79 rain-related calls, in 47 municipalities, with the commitment of 180 firefighters and 63 vehicles. The state recorded one death, in Ipira, in the Midwest, and totals more than 155 homeless people, according to the latest update from Civil Defense. Araranguá, Praia Grande and São João do Sul declared an emergency.
