During a hearing held this Thursday (2), the Court determined that the federal and state public ministries (MPF and MPMG) and the Public Defender’s Office of Minas Gerais (DPMG) identify those affected by the Vale tragedy, in Brumadinho, which must be compensated individually.
After that, the mining company will have a period of time to analyze and respond. Afterwards, a new hearing will be scheduled so that the criteria and amounts for compensation can be analyzed.
On January 25, 2019, a mining company Vale dam broke and dumped 12 million cubic meters of waste at company facilities, communities and the Paraopeba River, in Brumadinho, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte.
In total, 270 people disappeared under the mud, including two pregnant women. The bodies of three victims have not yet been found. Nobody was punished.
A year later, the case is still in the process of summoning the accused — moment in which the Court informs the defendants that they are responding to a Criminal Action and gives them the deadline to present, in writing, the first points of their defenses.
