MST opens new camp in Minas Gerais’ Zona da Mata

-

With the motto “Occupy for Brazil to feed”, the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) opened another camp on the Confraria farm, in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais. The objective is to demand that the State carry out agrarian reform and welcome more than 250 families already registered by the movement.

“We will continue to occupy land so that the people do not go hungry, we will continue fighting as long as there are people without land and land without people, we will not back down from the decision to fight for the right to life, to produce food and have dignity. In Juiz de Fora alone, the numbers of discouraged people are alarming, there are more than 20 thousand people who don’t know they are going to eat tomorrow”, warns Carol Rodrigues, from the MST directorate.

According to the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS), the number of families in extreme poverty in Juiz de Fora grew by more than 25% in one year. Currently, 26,832 families survive on a monthly income of R$105.00.

As a result, the camp also houses people in situations of food insecurity and social vulnerability who want to produce real food and a better quality of life.

For the MST, the current scenario of inequality is the result of a project to dismantle public policies that has lasted since the 2016 coup against President Dilma (PT).

“Families are unable to support themselves and are forced by the State to live in conditions considered unhealthy by society”, the movement pointed out in a note.
