Minas Gerais is on its way to achieving international recognition as free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination

Minas Gerais, one of Brazil’s main agricultural hubs, is on its way to achieving a significant milestone: international recognition as free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. A crucial step to achieving this feat is ensuring that all production in the state is properly updated in relation to herd data. This journey is extremely important for the agricultural sector in Minas Gerais and deserves special attention.

Although the state no longer requires vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, obtaining disease-free status without the need for vaccination is a rigorous process. It involves a series of steps, including updating herd data not only for cattle and buffaloes, but also for other species such as horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, birds, pigs, aquatic animals and bees. All producers of these species must update their information with the Minas Gerais Agricultural Institute (IMA).

As reported by Difusora 95, Rosana Cunha Mendes, veterinarian and coordinator of the IMA regional office in Patrocínio, highlights that producers have until June 30th to update their herds’ registration. This includes cattle, buffaloes, crosses and bees.

As for the means to make this declaration, producers have the option of doing it in person at the IMA offices or through the rural producer portal, for those who are already registered in the system.

It is important to highlight that vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease is no longer carried out in Minas Gerais. With the collaboration of all rural producers, it is expected that, from May 1st to June 30th, the herds’ registration update will be carried out with the Instituto Mineiro de Agropecuária, together with the provision of information on vaccination against the rage held in 2024.
