The west of Santa Catarina was already punished by heavy rains on Thursday afternoon. The municipality of Capinzal is the one that recorded the most serious incidents. In the city, the asphalt on Dom Vicente Gramázio Street cracked in half.

Videos on social media show the force of the water across the road and the moment a pole bursts. Additionally, there are images of businesses taken over by water.

A school bus was swept away on Thursday afternoon. There were five children inside the vehicle – all of them managed to get out safely, according to information from Rádio Capinzal. Friday classes were canceled in the city.

Weather forecast

The Civil Defense of Santa Catarina published a warning of intense and voluminous rain forecast for this Thursday and Friday. According to the agency, the storms are the result of the approach of a cold front coming from Rio Grande do Sul.

For this Thursday, the forecast is for storms mainly for the Grande Oeste, Planalto Sul and Litoral Sul and may advance to other regions, such as Vale do Itajaí and Grande Florianópolis.

On Friday, Civil Defense reported that the cold front will establish itself in the state and maintain the condition of heavy and voluminous rain. Accumulations between Thursday and Friday should vary between 150 and 200 millimeters, especially in areas bordering RS.

The rain is expected to continue in SC until Saturday morning, when the cold front begins to move towards RS again, with the risk of the southern region of Santa Catarina still suffering from isolated rain showers.
