On Gabigol’s return, Flamengo achieves a narrow victory over Amazonas in the Copa do Brasil

O Flamengo came out ahead of Amazonas in the third phase of the Brazil’s Cup. The red-and-blacks beat the Amazonian team 1-0, this Wednesday, at Maracanã. The winning goal for the Rio team came in the first half, with Pedro. In the rest of the game, the Cariocas had a lot of difficulty creating good shots.

The match was marked by Gabigol’s return to the field. The striker came on in the 19th minute of the second half and returned to playing after more than two months. The player had been suspended for doping.

The two teams will face each other again on May 22, in Manaus. Flamengo goes to the field and could lose by a goal difference but will still advance in the competition.

The game

The duel started open, with both teams focused on the attack. The first good chance came after five minutes, with De la Cruz. The midfielder took a risk from outside the area and saw the ball go close to the goal.

Little by little, the red and blacks got the ball. Flamengo scored in the 19th minute, when Pedro took advantage of a cross and headed it into the net.

After the goal, the outlook of the match did not change. Flamengo continued to have control of the ball, but saw Amazonas trying to advance. The visitors even found the net with Diogo. However, the move was disallowed due to offside.

Only in the final minutes did Flamengo again find itself in danger. Allan took a risk from outside the area and forced Edson Mardden to make a good save. Thus, the red-and-blacks went into the break with the minimum advantage on the scoreboard.

In the second half, the home team almost expanded after just a minute. Lorran took advantage of the cross and finished over the crossbar. However, after that, the red-and-blacks again failed on the last pass.

It was only after 35 minutes that Flamengo was once again in danger. Matheus Gonçalves finished for a good save by Edson Mardden. Then, Luiz Araújo made an individual play, but shot over the defense.

In the final minutes, the locals tried to exert pressure, without success. So much so that the fans at Maracanã even booed the team’s exchange of aimless passes. Amazonas seemed satisfied and was content with the minimal defeat at Maracanã.
