A three-month-old baby, identified as Moizes Amorin da Cruz, died in the early hours of Tuesday (30) at the Hospital Regional de Sorriso, 420 km from Cuiabá. His mother alleges medical negligence.

According to the child’s mother, she first took her son to a Family Health Center (PSF) because she had flu symptoms, but they told the mother to return home and give the child inhalation. The baby got worse and the mother took her son to the Family Health Unit (USF), where Moizes was treated and referred again for treatment at home.

Once again, the child got worse and the mother returned to the central UPA, but the mother said she was unable to be admitted. The mother went to a private hospital in the city and the doctors said that the baby would need to be hospitalized for 7 days because he had a throat infection, but she didn’t have the resources to keep him hospitalized.

“She asked for blood and urine tests. And he was unable to urinate and was screaming in pain. Another doctor looked at him and gave him antibiotics and sent him home. He slept better, but in the early morning it got worse. He needed to stay in a private hospital for 7 days, but I I couldn’t afford to keep him in the room. The doctor sent him to the UPA with an urgent letter to go to the Regional Office”, he says.

According to the mother, the child was sent from the private hospital back to the Central UPA with an urgent request to be sent to the Regional Hospital. Arriving at the hospital, the child was treated, but suffered two cardiorespiratory arrests and died.

“They saw that he was having difficulty breathing and started to turn purple. They inhaled and he improved. The doctor was measuring his pulse and it was stopping. She ran with him to another room. They called me and said that he had two stops heart problems, the first one they managed to save, but the second one was hopeless”, he explains.

In a statement, the Sorriso City Hall lamented the loss of the baby and said that the Municipal Administration has already started measures to investigate the care provided at all times when the family sought support both in Upinha in the east zone and in UPA Central.
