Congressman Diego Guimarães (Republicans) plans to hold a technical seminar in Mato Grosso to discuss sustainable ways of expanding the use of irrigation in the state’s crops. The parliamentarian’s idea is that the event will be held in the second half of this year and include representatives from the University of Nebraska and water resource managers in the North American state, a global reference in the use of irrigation, among the participants.

Diego was in Nebraska to learn about how water resources management works and how this means that the North American state has 3.5 million hectares of irrigated areas through 100,000 drilled wells, without harm to the environment. “In Mato Grosso, we have approximately 200 thousand hectares and the potential to reach 4 million hectares. This would ensure, more than a second harvest, a high quality first harvest.”

Because of this, Guimarães wants to bring together at the event, in addition to representatives of the North American state, directors of the National Water Agency (ANA), members of the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema-MT), members of the State and Federal Public Ministry (MPE and MPF), judges and rural producers. “I want all these actors to learn about the Nebraska model, so that, very soon, all of this is also working and bringing even more wealth, security in food production to our state and certainly even more development for Mato Grosso”.

As part of the delegation of the third edition of the “Mission Nebraska”, organized by the Association of Producers of Beans, Pulses, Special Grains and Irrigators of Mato Grosso (Aprofir-MT), the parliamentarian had the opportunity to visit farms, study centers, companies and the University of Nebraska, responsible for several studies that provide water security to the state.

Other actions

Based on what he learned in Nebraska, in addition to the seminar, the deputy defended the implementation of a state irrigation policy in Mato Grosso. Guimarães highlighted that there are currently bureaucratic and infrastructure obstacles that make it impossible for irrigation to be expanded and that the issue needs to be addressed by the Legislature.

Diego also invited directors of the two largest irrigation system companies in Nebraska to set up shop in the Cáceres Processing and Export Zone (ZPE). Companies would benefit from tax benefits to even export the kits to other countries. The directors of these companies responded positively to the invitation and, in the coming months, will travel to Mato Grosso to learn about the state’s reality.
