The apple harvest in São Joaquim is linked to the increase in the number of jobs in the city due to the seasonal demand for labor during the harvest period. The mayor of the municipality of São Joaquim, Giovani Nunes, explains that during the harvest, there is a significant need for workers to carry out activities such as harvesting, selecting, packaging and transporting apples.

— This increase in demand for temporary workers creates employment opportunities for local residents and seasonal migrants and contributes to job creation in the region. Furthermore, the increase in economic activity related to the apple harvest can indirectly boost other sectors, such as local commerce and services — highlights the mayor of São Joaquim and president of the Municipal Development Council, Giovani Nunes.

At the same time as generating opportunities, the increase in workers in the apple harvest in São Joaquim brings some challenges to the city, such as overloaded infrastructure, environmental impact, precarious working conditions, social conflicts and seasonal economic dependence. To resolve these challenges, the municipality implemented the DEL methodology with the aim of promoting dialogue between local government, business people and civil society, planning and implementing an Economic Development Council to create the concept of sustainable development with a set deadline.

According to Instituto Del/Facisc consultant, Aline Nandi, it is important that local authorities and those involved develop policies and measures to ensure an adequate balance between economic development and the preservation of the environment and the quality of life of local residents.

— This may include investments in infrastructure, adequate labor regulations, environmental protection and diversification of the local economy — he highlights.

One of the objectives of the proposal developed in São Joaquim is to improve working conditions related to apple production. Among the actions developed are improved communication when workers arrive in the municipality, greater integration with producers on issues related to labor dynamics, improved assistance to these workers in social, housing, health and even hiring issues.

The Association of Apple and Pear Producers of Santa Catarina (Amap) also played a large role in this cycle. According to the institution, São Joaquim receives 8 to 10 thousand workers per harvest.

— Producers and the municipality work together to regularize the situation of workers even before they start working with e-social registration and awareness about NR3 1— , highlights the president of Amap, Rafael Vieira Grillo, who regulates safety and health at work in agriculture, livestock, forestry, forestry and aquaculture. It establishes guidelines and requirements to ensure the safety of rural workers, preventing accidents, occupational diseases and other risks related to work in these activities.

Other benefits granted until the 29th of April, such as food assistance, with 57 units delivered, travel and transportation assistance with 37 assistances and donations of clothes and coats with 219 assistances, demonstrate that the situation of workers has been improving after the implementation of the Del Program in São Joaquim.
