The movement of international passengers grew at Santa Catarina airports in the first quarter of 2024. There were 316,849 thousand passengers, 84.8% more than that recorded in the same period in 2023. The result was also above the national average, which grew by 23 %.

The data was collected by the State Secretariat for Ports, Airports and Railways (SPAF), according to information released by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) last week. The state has the third largest movement of international passengers in Brazil, behind only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

The international movement is also reflected in the cargo sector, which registered a growth of 20.8% compared to 2023. In the first months of 2024, 1.1 thousand tons were already handled, and with the recent inclusion of new lines of cargo planes connecting Santa Catarina with Europe, the trend is for an evolution in these data.

The numbers already reflect the growth in the number of flights we had in the summer season and with the new freighter lines. For the remainder of the year we have already confirmed the debut of passenger flights to Panama and others in South America, which gives us the prospect of even greater growth”, assesses SPAF secretary, Beto Martins.

Santa Catarina has the largest international movement in southern Brazil. Rio Grande do Sul had 95 thousand passengers and Paraná 44 thousand passengers in the first quarter. Florianópolis Airport continues to be the main entry and exit point, with 309.4 thousand international passengers. Navegantes Airport registered 7,300 passengers.

Domestic movement

Domestic cargo movement also grew in the first quarter. There were 3 thousand tons, 6.4%, more than in the first months of 2023. Navegantes Airport had 1.3 thousand tons, Florianópolis 1.2 thousand tons, Joinville 277.5 tons, Chapecó 198.8 tons, Jaguaruna 39.3 tons and Correia Pinto 1.5 tons.

The movement of domestic passengers at SC airports fell by 1.6% in the first quarter, compared to the same period in 2023. There were 1.6 million passengers transported at six airports. Florianópolis Airport registered 841.6 thousand passengers, followed by Navegantes with 544.8 thousand, Chapecó with 142.1 thousand, Joinville with 115.2 thousand, Jaguaruna with 29.5 and Correia Pinto with 5.2 thousand.

According to what we found, the market has faced difficulties arising from the lack of replacement parts and aircraft for companies, which has hampered the expansion of the sector during this period.”, evaluates Martins.
