With total coverage of up to R$55 million in compensation, the Deliberative Council of the Fund for Development and Animal Health Defense of Rio Grande do Sul (Fundesa) approved, this Tuesday (30.04), livestock insurance against foot-and-mouth disease.

Under the proposal of the company Swiss RE Corporate Solutions, it aims to guarantee coverage in the event of disease outbreaks. The insurance establishes a deductible of R$15 million. According to the president of the Fund, Rogério Kerber, in addition to protecting animals, this measure also aims to protect Fundesa’s balance in crisis situations.

The need for this insurance arose after the withdrawal of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease in 2021, despite studies indicating a controlled situation, mapping the main risk zones. Kerber expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the preventive measures adopted, minimizing the likelihood of the insurer taking action.

It is noteworthy that the compensation table to be used by the insurance follows the criteria already established by the Fund for reimbursements to producers, based on the age category of the affected animals.
