The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed on Tuesday night the postponement of the match between Inter x Juventude, initially scheduled for tomorrow, at 9:30 pm, in Beira-Rio, for the third phase of the Copa do Brasil.

The decision was taken due to the problems faced by Rio Grande do Sul due to the high volumes of rain that hit the state. The confrontation was transferred to May 10th, a Friday, at 9 pm.

The CBF responded to a request from the Rio Grande do Sul government. According to the entity’s note, “the decision taken in line with the Governor’s appeal aims primarily to protect the safety and physical integrity of everyone involved in the sporting spectacle, including players, technical committee, referees, fans and other professionals.”

The request for postponement was made by the authorities in Rio Grande do Sul late in the afternoon. The state governor, Eduardo Leite, also spoke in a video on his Instagram and reinforced the appeal.

– We asked for the postponement of the game between Inter and Juventude for the Copa do Brasil because we understand that all our staff and efforts must be focused on rescuing people and serving those most in need at this critical moment we are going through – he explained.

The Juventude delegation was unable to reach Porto Alegre due to the situation on the roads. The trip was initially scheduled for 1:30 pm, but was postponed until the end of the afternoon due to blockages on the way between Caxias do Sul and Porto Alegre.

The club decided to start traveling via an alternative route, but was stuck in the field after a barrier fell between the cities of Boa Vista do Sul and Teutônia and had to return to Caxias do Sul, where it arrived at around 10pm on Monday.

The storms that have hit Rio Grande do Sul since Monday have already left five dead and 18 missing. According to Civil Defense, 77 cities recorded problems due to the rain. Meteorological warnings indicate that the rain is expected to intensify in the coming days, worsening the situation.

“Due to the adverse weather conditions in Rio Grande do Sul, the CBF transfers the clash between Internacional and Juventude, in Beira-Rio, scheduled for this Wednesday night (1), for the Copa Betano in Brazil, to the 10th. of May.

The intense rains, with a rainfall of 300mm, made the sporting event unfeasible due to force majeure.

The decision taken in line with the Governor’s appeal aims primarily to protect the safety and physical integrity of everyone involved in the sporting spectacle, including players, technical committee, referees, fans and other professionals.

The CBF, in its role as caretaker of national football, reiterates its commitment to the well-being of participants and thanks all fans of the sport for their understanding.”
