The Arlindo Cruz Institute, a non-governmental organization that aims to immortalize the artistic work of Arlindo Cruz, was launched this Friday, April 26th, at Teatro Rival Petrobras.

According to Babi Cruz, the samba singer’s wife, the main purpose is to give access to Arlindo’s fans, to appreciate the artist’s instruments, trophies, photos, sandals, accessories and clothes.

“Brazil has a short memory when it comes to its idols, which is why we decided to immortalize Arlindo’s work by displaying his belongings to his countless fans.

We chose Teatro Rival Petrobras, because Arlindo, in Tetro’s 90 years, was the artist who stepped on that stage the most. He had a show ‘Pagode do Arlindo’ running for ten years. So, it is only fair to launch the Arlindo Cruz Institute, on this stage that is so important for his career.”

In an interview with journalist Nelson Lima Neto from Ancelmo Gois’ Globo column, actress Angela Leal, general director of Teatro Rival Petrobras, also highlighted the long time in which Arlindo performed at the Theater.

“Arlindo was a bet from Rival. There were ten uninterrupted years in the theater. Time showed that Rival was right in betting on this great artist. He is the singer who has sung the most on our stage. So, I am very happy to host this launch party for the Arlindo Cruz Institute.”

Sambista has more than 500 songs recorded by other artists

Arlindo Domingos da Cruz Filho, or just Arlindo Cruz aged 65, was born in Madureira, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. His father was the musician Arlindão Cruz, and his mother Aracy da Cruz. Arlindo had an older brother, Acyr Marques Cruz, who was also a musician and passed away in April 2019.

At the age of 6, Arlindo received a cavaquinho from his father as a gift. There his interest in music began.

At the beginning of the 70s, Arlindo helped create the carnival group Cacique de Ramos, and it was there that he met the musicians who would go on to form the group Fundo de Quintal, in which he stayed for 12 years.

In 1993, Arlindo Cruz embarked on a solo career. It has more than 500 songs recorded by partner artists. Among the hits are the songs ‘Meu Lugar’, ‘Meu nome é favela’, ‘It’s still time to be happy’, ‘Casal sem shame’ (in partnership with Acyr Marques), Coisa de pele (in partnership with Jorge Aragão) .

Arlindo Cruz is married to Barbara Barbosa Macedo da Cruz, known as Babi Cruz. They are the parents of Arlindo Neto and Flora Cruz.

In 2017, Arlindo Cruz suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke and was admitted to Casa de Saúde São José (in Rio de Janeiro). He was discharged in 2018 and has lived under medical supervision ever since.
