Santa Catarina emerges as one of the main destinations for international sailors

Sailors from all over the world have turned their eyes to Marina Itajaí, a strategic point on the coast of Santa Catarina, in Itajaí, a city known for hosting The Ocean Race, the largest sailing competition in the world, and renowned nautical events, such as Marina Itajaí Boat Show. Since its foundation, in December 2015, the nautical complex has received more than 15 thousand sailboats and, currently, around 70% of its occupation is sailing boats. By the end of this month, at least 10 sailboats from countries such as France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Finland and Dominica are expected to anchor at the marina.

Among the visitors, a highlight is the sailboat Amazone, built in Finland in 1963 initially as a fishing boat and which came to Itajaí to carry out maintenance and to escape the intense cold of the Arctic. They will stay at Marina Itajaí for a month, before leaving towards the Amazon.

“The sailboat we use is specifically for charter operations in Antarctica. The reason we are in Itajaí during this period is due to the harsh Antarctic winter, which prevents us from carrying out maintenance there, given the lack of infrastructure. Itajaí stands out for its excellent conditions for this type of service. In two months, our next adventure will be in the Amazon, where we also plan to carry out charters. After our stay in that region, we will return to Ushuaia”, explains Russian crew member Ryabchikov Dmitry.
