Half of Canoas is underwater, show high-resolution satellite images from the company Planet Labs. One of the municipalities with the largest population in Rio Grande do Sul, Canoas has the entire sector west of BR-116 taken by water, which includes the neighborhoods of Harmonia, Rio Branco, Fátima, Mathias Velho, Mato Grande and São Luiz. The eastern sector of Canoas is predominantly dry, which allows the air base to operate for rescue flights and the arrival of humanitarian aid.
