In 2023, the state of Santa Catarina broke a record for elective surgeries. The government’s total investment last year was R$240 million to carry out elective surgeries, and the State will once again register hospitals to perform highly complex surgeries.

The actions are part of the State Elective Surgery Program “Fila Zero”, which takes place in partnership with Municipal Health Departments (SES) and hospitals that serve the Unified Health System (SUS). In total since the beginning of the program, approximately 163 thousand elective inpatient surgeries have been performed, of which 93 thousand were outpatient ophthalmological surgeries, including the cataract specialty.

According to the Secretary of Health of Santa Catarina, Carmen Zanotto, 13 new highly complex specialties were authorized by the government. “We had 13 new services enabled, that is, 13 new hospitals serving highly complex orthopedics. We have four new cardiology services in the state, which were Brusque, Jaraguá do Sul and Concórdia for adults and another highly complex cardiology service in Brusque, for children”, she says.

Registration of hospitals to perform highly complex surgeries

The secretary explains that the state will once again register hospitals interested in performing highly complex surgeries in different parts of the state. She comments that previously the government only paid for this type of service to hospitals in Florianópolis. This required transporting patients over long distances. “We are publishing another deliberation in the coming days, for those hospitals that have not adhered to these more complex procedures. They used to come to Florianópolis, because the state didn’t pay for things to do in the region. We expanded four thrombectomy services, so we already have Joinville authorized by the Ministry of Health, Florianópolis, Blumenau and Lages”, she explains.

Carmen details that in the region there is a very strong partnership with the Alto Vale Regional Hospital, and also with the Samária Hospital in carrying out highly complex surgeries. Although the Secretary explains that other small hospitals are also helping the state in carrying out elective surgeries. “The Santa Catarina table applies to all hospitals providing SUS services. So, surgeries in the State of Santa Catarina range from up to 12 times the cost for that procedure, depending on the complexity. So, we readjusted the SUS table to increase elective surgeries in the State. The two hospitals in Rio do Sul are part of this set of services. Just like other smaller hospitals in the region, they are participating in elective surgeries,” she concludes.
