Symposium in SC debates low-carbon agriculture

This Friday (3), the auditorium of FIESC (Federation of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina) hosted the South-Brazilian Symposium ABC+ Low Carbon Emission Agriculture.

What is the purpose of the event?

The event aimed to address Low Carbon Emission Agriculture (ABC), a set of agricultural and forestry practices aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector.

Among the topics highlighted were Integrated Systems, such as Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration, Direct Planting Systems for Vegetables and the Direct Planting System for Grains, in addition to the recovery of pastures, Biogas and Biomethane.

According to the State Management Coordinator of the ABC+ SC Plan, Humberto Bicca Neto, the Symposium expanded the debates to issues related to Low Carbon Agriculture.

“We present sustainable practices, technologies that are already being used in the states and that boost carbon sequestration. By 2030, the south of the country intends to reduce around 270 million tons of carbon equivalent from the atmosphere”, stated Bicca Neto.

Secretaries debate low-carbon agriculture

The event, which started at 9 am, was attended by three secretaries of State from the south of the country, for a discussion on regional actions to mitigate, adapt and combat climate change.

Organized by the State Management Groups of Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, together with the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Livestock and the Santa Catarina Rural Research and Extension Company (Epagri), with institutional support, the symposium received names important aspects of politics and agriculture.

The Secretaries of State for Agriculture and Livestock of Santa Catarina, Valdir Colatto; of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation of Rio Grande do Sul, Giovani Feltes; and Agriculture and Supply of Paraná, Norberto Ortigara.

According to Colatto, Santa Catarina aims to make agriculture more sustainable, competitive and adapted to climate change, consolidating the state as a reference in low-carbon agriculture.

“An example of this work are investments in pasture management and recovery, implementation of perennial pastures, soil and water conservation, management of animal production waste, planted forests and integrated systems”, states the secretary.
