The third phase of Operation Rotas da Fauna was carried out between March 29th and April 4th, in the region of Senhor do Bonfim, a joint action between the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the Institute of the Environment and Water Resources ( Inema) and the Environment Departments of Euclides da Cunha and Senhor do Bonfim.
According to information from the PRF, the actions aim to combat the practice of environmental and socio-environmental crimes, especially the illegal transport of wild animals on federal highways. The operation focused on intensifying environmental inspection.
During this action, which involved theoretical and practical activities, almost 1200 wild birds were rescued as a result of joint actions between PRF teams and Inema technicians. Among the species recovered were specimens of Papa-capim, Golinho, Azulão, Cardeal and Coleirinho, as well as parrots and parakeets.
The seizures occurred in several municipalities, including Queimadas, Senhor do Bonfim, Cansanção, Itiúba, Philadelphia, Ponto Novo and Jaguarari, where wildlife trafficking has been a growing concern.
The rescued animals that were not suitable for release were sent to the Wild Animal Screening Center (Cetas) in Cruz das Almas, ensuring their well-being and enabling their subsequent return to their natural habitat.
Trafficking and illegal breeding of wild animals in Brazil represent crimes with great environmental impact, involving everything from the capture to the illegal trade of wild specimens, especially birds, destined for the pet market, collectors and other purposes.
The Operation reaffirms the PRF and Inema’s commitment to combating these criminal practices and protecting the country’s natural wealth. The integration between public security and environmental bodies, as evidenced in these actions, is fundamental to face the challenges related to the preservation of Brazilian fauna and protecting biodiversity.
