The municipality of Ribeirão Cascalheira (700 kilometers from Cuiabá) recorded a seismic shock measuring 3.2 degrees on the Richter scale this Wednesday. Just News verified the information based on a report released by the Seismology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP).

According to the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB/CPRM), which is part of the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR), a tremor of up to 3.5 degrees of magnitude is generally not felt by the population. So far, there is no confirmation of damage caused by the earthquake.

In recent years, several earthquakes have been recorded in Mato Grosso by the USP observatory. In August 2022, a seismic shock occurred in the municipality of Araguaiana, in the Araguaia region, around 500 kilometers from Cuiabá, measuring 3.3 degrees on the Richter scale.

In April of that year, the municipality of Porto dos Gaúchos (250 kilometers from Sinop) recorded a seismic shock measuring 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale. In October 2021, three stations of the Seismological Observatory (Obsis) of the National University of Brasília identified a natural earthquake with 2.3º MLv (Local scale) magnitude in Porto dos Gaúchos. The event was also not noticed by residents.

Porto dos Gaúchos is nationally known by researchers for having recorded the largest earthquake in Brazil, in 1950, when a 6.9-magnitude tremor occurred in Serra do Tombador, around 100 kilometers from the city. Despite being considered a strong impact, the tremor did not cause damage.
