The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), held the Senate responsible this Thursday (25) for the advancement of the PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution) of the Quinquennium, which boosts the salaries of judges, prosecutors, delegates Federal Police, public defenders and lawyers.

“Each one with their own responsibilities. It was not the Chamber that guided the Five-Year Year. Each one who decides their own things, who is responsible for them, it cannot be said that the Chamber guided a project that is still a ‘bomb agenda'”, said in an interview with GloboNews.

“Given the numbers that the Treasury puts forward, which can vary from R$40 to R$80 billion, it is more than a bombshell”, added the parliamentarian.

Lira also said that it is “difficult to predict” whether the project will move forward in the Chamber because he believes that the text may not advance in the Senate given the negative repercussions.

The proposal, already approved by the Senate’s CCJ (Constitution and Justice Committee), changes the Constitution to guarantee an automatic 5% salary increase for the careers covered every five years, up to a limit of 35%.

Initially, the PEC granted the five-year period to judges and members of the Public Ministry. The commission extended the suspension to public defenders; members of the Union, state and Federal District lawyers; and delegates from the Federal Police.

“When you deal with the subject of judiciary, you have a serious problem to solve, which is a salary issue focused on a category that decides billions of reais earning, nowadays, very little, so we have to balance the situation. When 10 start to come in , 20, 30 categories of all state careers, you will lose control soon, everyone will be there”, said Lira.

At another point in the interview, the President of the Chamber again pointed out that it is necessary to deal with transparency “where the problem arose”, when citing matters that are presented in the Senate. “The fact is that whenever things are voted on, it is dealt with by Congress. Of course, approved in both Houses. But, where the problem arose, this has to be treated with transparency”, he said.

Lira did not name the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), when making these criticisms. The two maintain a protocol relationship, without close dialogue, and accumulate disagreements over the processing of proposals in Congress.

Such as Sheet showed, Pacheco indicated to allies that he wants to dehydrate the PEC and restrict the ban to judges and members of the Public Ministry to reduce the government’s resistance — which sees the issue as a bombshell for public accounts.

Senators close to Pacheco approached him after the proposal was approved by the CCJ to complain about the inclusion of more categories and state that there is a risk of defeat in the plenary.

Even with the government’s resistance, parliamentarians who spoke with the president of the Senate say that he must insist on approving the ban for judges, prosecutors and prosecutors until the end of his term.
