If you’re not familiar with the film or the character, know that Tangled is based on the classic tale of Rapunzel, a young girl with long magical hair who is locked in a tower. One day, Flynn Rider, an arrogant thief who has always gotten away with his natural charm, is nearby. In fact, when he sneaks into Rapunzel’s room – with a frying pan in his face in the middle – he tries to seduce her with a gesture that has never failed him… until that moment.

As ScreenRant reports, director Byron Howard wanted “the most handsome and attractive male lead Disney has ever had,” so they did market research with impromptu groups who could give their opinion on the ideal man. “All the women in the studio attended the ‘handsome men’s meeting’ where we gathered photos of their favorite handsome men – photos from the internet, from books, from their wallets… – and they were very specific about what they found most attractive. They were very specific about what they liked and what they didn’t like,” Howard recalls.

Women would come in, post pictures of the most attractive guys they had ever seen, and then point out their flaws. Everyone was devastated. Nobody was perfect. “He’s the kind of character who has fun with words, regardless of the fact that someone else enjoys them as much as he does. There’s something very Cary Grant-like about him. Deep down, he’s really kind of a lost soul who doesn’t quite know what he wants or who he is,” says screenwriter Dan Fogelman.

In the original, he is voiced by Zachary Levi, who years later would become popular for playing Shazam in the DC film of the same name. Physically, they are not very similar, but Levi brought the charm of his voice and his ability to sing songs alongside Mandy Moore.
