What they are sharing: that Madonna’s concert in Copacabana, in Rio de Janeiro, was paid for by the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, while Rio Grande do Sul did not receive any federal funds to help the population affected by severe floods.

Estadão Verifica investigated and concluded that: it’s fake. The singer’s show cost around R$60 million and was sponsored by the Itaú bank, together with the Heineken brand. The free event had the support of Rio de Janeiro city hall and the state government, which allocated R$10 million each to production. In relation to the disasters in Rio Grande do Sul, the federal government released the payment of R$580 million in amendments to the State.

Know more: In the midst of the biggest environmental disaster in Rio Grande do Sul, false information is circulating that the federal government financed Madonna’s concert in Rio de Janeiro and did not send resources to the victims of the floods. However, the singer’s performance was sponsored by private institutions, such as Banco Itaú and Heineken, and supported by the city hall and government of Rio de Janeiro.

The Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (Secom) published a statement stating that there was no allocation of federal money for the singer’s event, which took place on Copacabana Beach last Saturday, 4. The chief minister of the department, Paulo Pimenta , recorded a video in which he says he is “perplexed by the amount of lies” about the connection between the Madonna show and the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.

Madonna’s show was sponsored by private companies

There was no federal investment in the Madonna show. How did you publish the Estadão, the singer’s show cost around R$60 million, sponsored by companies such as Banco Itaú and Heineken. The public investment occurred through the city of Rio de Janeiro and the state government, which allocated R$10 million each to BonusTrack, the producer responsible for the event.

The singer brought together more than 1.6 million people on Copacabana Beach, according to Riotur estimates. This Monday, the 6th, the government of Rio de Janeiro released a report that the event generated a return of more than R$300 million for the state’s economy. On Instagram, the administration highlighted the “success” of the artist’s arrival and highlighted the “Madonna effect” with the arrival of 150,000 national and international tourists and 96% of the city’s hotel occupancy.

Federal government released amendments for flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul

On May 2, Lula was in Rio Grande do Sul to show solidarity with the State. During the visit, the PT member said that there will be no shortage of resources from the federal government to minimize the impacts of the rains that hit the region. The Union’s task force to serve the people of Rio Grande do Sul has the support of 17 ministries, the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the National Supply Company (Conab), the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) and the Armed Forces.

Different disinformation pieces on social media allege that the federal government did not allocate funds to Rio Grande do Sul. In fact, as reported by Secom, the Institutional Relations Secretariat (SRI) authorized the payment of R$580 million in State amendments to meet 497 municipalities.

According to the federal government, money is also expected to be released through the ministries of Health, Regional Development, Agriculture and Livestock, Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, Sports, Education and Justice. The federal government also reported having mobilized other relief and assistance actions in Rio Grande do Sul.

The National Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security (Sesan) committed R$8.39 million to pay for 52 thousand food baskets to the State. The Ministry of Health confirmed the mobilization of 60 professionals from the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and Grupo Hospitalar Conceição (GhC), in addition to the sending of 20 emergency kits to serve up to 30 thousand people for a month.

The Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger made R$807.2 million available in advance of payments already planned, such as Bolsa Família, Auxílio Gás, among others. Another action involves the Ministry of Communications, which, through Telebras, sent 14 Transportable Satellite Terminals (T3SAT) for broadband connection via satellite, with the aim of assisting rescue teams.

How to deal with posts like this: Both facts described in the publications were widely reported in the press. Itaú’s sponsorship of the pop singer’s show, for example, became public in March, announced by the bank itself. Information related to the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul is disseminated nationally daily, including federal government measures to contain the damage caused by the disaster. Before sharing questionable content, do a keyword search on your preferred search engine (here, the report searched for “federal government” and “Rio Grande do Sul”, and “Madonna”, “patrocinio” and “ show”).
