According to research by the Institute of Social and Economic Justice (IJSN) based on IBGE data, Alagoas was the state that most reduced extreme poverty in 2023. According to the data released, the rate in 2022 was 13.2%, and rose to 8.8% in 2023 in Alagoas – a drop of 4.3 percentage points. This means that more than 100 thousand people from Alagoas stopped living below the extreme poverty line last year.

The State was followed by Amapá (drop of 3.9 percentage points), Paraíba (3.7pp) and Piauí (3.6pp). At the other extreme, Rondônia showed an increase of 0.30 percentage points.

Alagoas also stood out as being the fourth state with the highest overall reduction in poverty, marking an 8% drop in the rate.

For Governor Paulo Dantas, these results are the result of substantial investments in public policies aimed at generating income and economic development.

“In 2023 alone, the state government invested more than R$600 million in actions aimed at combating poverty, with various programs. We have just created the Alagoas Without Hunger State Council, whose main objective is to align and expand the actions of the Alagoas Without Hunger Program, which has generated great results and donations of tons of food collected through donations and partnerships”, he stated.

Paulo Dantas also recognized that there is still a lot to be done, but that these results encourage the government of Alagoas to increasingly implement public policies to combat hunger.

“We have done a lot, but there is still a lot to be done. We have a rate of 8.8% that needs to be reduced more and more. Allied with the Federal Government’s public policies, we will reduce it even further and these results show that we are on the right path”, he celebrated.

ALAGOAS WITHOUT HUNGER

In the morning, Paulo Dantas opened the first meeting of the State Council of Alagoas Without Hunger, which aims to expand the Government’s actions to combat hunger.

The Secretary of Planning, Management and Heritage and coordinator of the Program, Paula Dantas, took office as president of the council. In addition to it, the entire secretariat of the State Executive, representatives of the Judiciary and Legislative powers, the Productive Sector and 10 representatives of Civil Society make up the collegiate.

In his speech, the Governor stated that the actions of Alagoas Sem Fome have changed the reality of thousands of people from Alagoas, but recognized that there is still a lot to be done and that, for this reason, the State Council was being created, so that the actions can be expanded and enhanced throughout the State.

Next Sunday, the D-Day of Alagoas Without Hunger will be held in the municipality of Olho d’Água Grande, where, among other actions, the State government should announce Creche Cria, Praça Cria, Complexo Nutricional, Urban Gardens inside a school state and the actions of each secretariat aimed at serving the public in vulnerable situations.
