Acre records a 13.7% increase in deaths from electrical accidents; there were seven deaths in 2023

Acre recorded seven deaths from electrical accidents in 2023, an alarming figure that raises concerns about the safety and risks involved in the use of electricity. The 2022 Yearbook of the Brazilian Association for Awareness of the Dangers of Electricity pointed out that the state led the ranking in fatal accidents involving electricity, based on the proportion of inhabitants. However, according to the new research referring to 2023, Acre went from first to fifth position in this ranking, a positive advance, but still worrying.

In 2023, of the nine accidents recorded in the state, seven resulted in deaths, representing an increase of 13.7% compared to the previous year. This data reinforces the importance of awareness campaigns and preventive measures to avoid electricity-related tragedies. Energiza Acre has promoted educational actions to prevent this type of situation, but there are still challenges to be faced.

According to Energisa’s occupational health and safety coordinator, Gabriela Mendes, among the concerns highlighted are the installation of water pumps, which, although not on Energisa’s electrical network, represent a significant risk when poorly installed. Furthermore, renovations and painting work during the summer can pose a risk of electrical accidents, especially when close to the power grid.

“We still have some concerns, such as a water pump, which is not on our network, but concerns us because it is electricity and it is something very common here in the state. People sometimes make connections at the pumps with professionals who are not qualified, who are not qualified, they end up leaving loose wiring and that is a risk for whoever is passing by or for the owner and people who have access”, explains the coordinator.

She clarifies that other issues include paying attention to internal electrical installations, using power extension accessories safely, purchasing certified materials and preventing energy theft, known as “cat”.

“Another problem is the issue of reforms. We are going to be there during the summer, where people will want to renovate, paint the house and there are scaffoldings that are placed on some facades to renovate, which do not even need to touch the electricity grid, just being so close can cause an accident”, he concludes. .

It is important that the population is alerted to the dangers related to broken cables after heavy rain, and it is recommended that qualified professionals be contacted for any necessary repairs. Awareness of these preventative measures is essential to ensure everyone’s safety and prevent fatal accidents involving electricity. The message is clear: prevention is the best way to avoid tragedies and preserve lives.
