Deputy Thiago Abrahim presents material to combat ageism in Amazonas

The State Policy against Ageism will be implemented in collaboration with civil society

Manaus (AM) — State deputy Thiago Abrahim (União Brasil) presented in the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), bill no. 37/2024, which provides for policies against ageism, the name given to prejudice against people based on your age.

“We need to prevent, combat and eradicate discrimination and promote equal opportunities between different age groups. We cannot allow a qualified and experienced person to lose a job because they are over 50 years old, for example, or for an 18-year-old person to not have an opportunity because they are young”,

said Abraham.

According to the author of the proposal, the State Policy against Ageism will be implemented in collaboration with civil society.

“There will be the creation and application of rules that prohibit discrimination based on age, with effective monitoring and penalizing mechanisms. We need to develop campaigns to raise awareness among the population about the issue of ageism and specific training actions for professionals from different areas”, explained the União Brasil deputy.

According to the bill, “companies, public and private institutions operating in the State of Amazonas will be able to promote internal actions to combat ageism, encouraging equal opportunities and non-discrimination based on age, both in the context of work and in commercial relations or provision of services”.

“The state of Amazonas needs to encourage studies and research on ageism, in order to better understand its causes, consequences and combat strategies, as well as monitor the effectiveness of policies to combat ageism. And we, representatives of the people, need to defend and fight for this cause,” he concluded.
