Court blocks bridge for heavy vehicle traffic on the border of SC and RS

Following a request from the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS), the Court ordered the ban on the transit of cargo vehicles weighing over 10 tons across the Anita Garibaldi concrete bridge. The passage over the Mampituba River connects the municipalities of Passo de Torres, in Santa Catarina, and Torres, in Rio Grande do Sul.

Therefore, only light vehicles are permitted to travel at reduced speeds. The decision also determined strict control over compliance with the ban, through the installation of warning signs, physical barriers for cargo vehicles (height and width limiter), among other measures. In case of non-compliance, the expected fine is R$10,000 per day of delay.

The public civil action (ACP), signed by public prosecutor Dinamárcia Maciel de Oliveira, was filed against the municipalities due to the structural damage to the bridge. The MPRS points out the need for corrective maintenance as soon as possible “due to considerable deterioration in the metal profiles supporting the bridge deck”.

What the municipalities say

According to Passo de Torres City Hall, control of heavy vehicles on the bridge has been carried out since February 10th. A surveillance company was hired and monitors the site 24 hours a day. The region is also signposted.

Furthermore, a technical report carried out in 2023 revealed that “despite the apparent damage, the bridge structure does not present an imminent risk of falling”. Furthermore, the municipal administration stated that engineers classified the general conditions of the bridge as satisfactory and that the damage can be corrected with specific interventions.
