Renan Filho celebrates reduction in extreme poverty rates in Alagoas in 2023

Among the 25 states in the country, Alagoas saw the biggest reduction in the extreme poverty rate in 2023. The Alagoas indicator fell by 4.3%, from 13.2% to 8.8%. The numbers are the results of an analysis carried out by the Jones dos Santos Neves Institute (IJSN) in the Pnad survey, which was released on Friday, 19, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In 2023, poverty and extreme poverty rates in Brazil reached the lowest rates since the beginning of the historical series in 2012, as revealed by the IJSN study. According to the institute, the poverty rate decreased in 26 of the 27 states compared to

the previous year, while extreme poverty fell in 25 federations.
Overall, the poverty rate fell from 31.6% in 2022 to 27.5% in 2023, which in absolute terms represents that the poverty situation decreased from 67.8 million in 2022 to 59.2 million in 2023.

On the national average, the extremely poor population fell from 12.7 million in 2022 to 9.5 million in 2023. The drop was 3.1 million, which is equivalent to the population of the state of Alagoas.

ALAGOAS

In percentage terms, Alagoas was the state, among the 25, that had the biggest drop in extreme poverty in 2023, going from 13.2% in 2022 to 8.8% last year. Furthermore, it was the 4th state that reduced poverty the most, with a decrease of 8%.

Due to the positive results, state politicians celebrated the achievement through the social network X, formerly Twitter, and attributed the fruits to social development programs that have been applied to the population of Alagoas.

The Minister of Transport of Brazil, Renan Filho, celebrated the state’s achievement in reducing extreme poverty. Furthermore, the minister attributes the progress to State Government programs.
“Alagoas was the Brazilian state that most reduced extreme poverty in the country! This achievement is the result of programs such as Cria, Cartão Escola 10 and Vem Que Dá Tempo, in addition to the largest cycle of public investments in the state, totaling 10 billion in 8 years. This is more progress for our people!’, celebrated Renan Filho.

Federal deputy, Ronaldo Medeiros, was also thrilled by the state’s positive results on the social network. “Poverty and extreme poverty in Brazil had the biggest drops since 2012, at 27.5% and 4.4%, respectively. Alagoas is the 4th state that has reduced poverty the most: -8%; and the biggest drop in extreme poverty: -4.3%. This is the result of more employment, income and programs like Bolsa Família”.
