In the last 10 years, R$609 million was allocated to disability pensions caused by work accidents in Mato Grosso do Sul. During this period, R$387 million was also spent on sickness benefit due to work accidents in the State. This historical series data covers the period from 2012 to 2021 and was released by the TRT-24 (Regional Labor Court of the 24th Region).

Among these cases is a garbage collector, who at the age of 26, suffered serious injuries while carrying out his duties in the city of Rio Brilhante, 161 km from the Capital. The accident occurred in 2021, when the worker was run over by a garbage truck. He suffered a femur fracture, requiring three surgeries and becoming completely and permanently incapacitated for activity.

In this case, the worker will receive compensation of R$435,000 for material, moral and aesthetic damages, after judgment by the Second Panel of the Regional Labor Court of the 24th Region, which condemned the company responsible for the accident.

That same year, 179 work accidents involving household waste collectors were recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul, according to data from the Occupational Safety and Health Observatory, which gathers information from the INSS (National Social Security Institute)

The regional manager of the Safe Work Program, judge João de Deus Gomes de Souza, highlights the importance of cooperation between employers and workers. “The main role of the employer is to make safety equipment available for them to use. There is a need for the worker to be able to use it for their safety, so that they can return to their home safely.”

Accidents in numbers – In 2023, the Labor Court in Mato Grosso do Sul received 3,261 new cases regarding occupational diseases and 2,723 actions referring to work accidents. The most recent data, from 2022, indicates that Campo Grande was the city with the most notifications of work accidents (41.3%), followed by Dourados (10.3%) and Três Lagoas (7.04%), totaling 10 thousand accidents and 58 deaths in the state.

The economic sector with the most notifications was hospital care activities. In 2022 alone, 690 accidents involving nursing technicians and 167 involving nurses were recorded.

Other occupations with the highest incidence were production line feeder (404 cases), cleaner (267 cases), truck driver (250 cases), agricultural worker (154 cases) and household waste collector (153 cases).

As for deaths from work accidents in Mato Grosso do Sul, they occur mainly among truck and bus drivers, boilermakers, welders, bricklayers, civil construction and mining machine operators, and mobile agricultural workers.

TRT-24 data also reveals that, for every 10 accidents, seven occur with men. The most affected age group is 18 to 24 years old for men and 30 to 34 years old for women.
