Celebrated today, April 24, the National Day of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) alludes to Law 10,436, of 2002, which recognizes Libras as a legal means of communication and expression. Used in communication with deaf people, this is a language that incorporates gestures and facial and body expressions, standing out as an important tool for social inclusion.

As part of the development and application of accessibility policies by the Court of Justice of the State of Piauí (TJ-PI), in order to guarantee access to justice for citizens with disabilities, sessions are already being held with the presence of a Libras interpreter. This is the professional responsible for facilitating communication between people with hearing impairments and listeners, translating, in real time, between oral language and sign language.

Judicial Secretary Paula Meneses explains that the Secretariat provides the calendar of the week’s sessions to be broadcast on Mondays. “All face-to-face sessions, broadcast via YouTube, have a Libras interpreter and, at this first moment, also the virtual sessions of the 3rd Specialized Civil Chamber and the 3rd Chamber of Public Law”, she informs.

In addition to this resource, the deaf population can count on other initiatives developed by the Permanent Accessibility and Inclusion Commission (ACES) of TJ-PI, such as the face-to-face service room (UACI) at the Civil and Criminal Forum Desembargador Joaquim de Souza Neto, exclusively for the care of people with disabilities (PWDs), and the promotion of training for magistrates; servers and collaborators for the care of PWDs.

In addition to these actions, the TJ-PI established the Priority Processing Program for Cases in which PcDs appear, as parties or interested parties, in the Piauí Courts.

Alessandra Leal, judicial analyst and member of ACES, explains that the commission’s purpose is to ensure qualified service to the entire population. “Our mission is to promote the overcoming of physical, attitudinal, communicational and technological barriers in the Judiciary, guaranteeing equity and citizenship for people with disabilities”, she states.
