MAC Bahia hosts indigenous crafts fair this weekend

The ethnic artisans and craftsmen Tupinambá, Pataxó Hã-Hã-Hãe, Kariri-Xocó, Kiriri, Pataxó, Tuxá and Kaimbé, will exhibit and sell their products in Bahia Crafts Fair – Indigenous Editionwhich takes place this weekend at , at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahia.

Between Friday (26th) and Sunday (28th) April, from 4pm to 10pm, the Fair will bring together communities living in the identity territories of Velho Chico, Semi-Árido Nordeste II, Itaparica, Metropolitano de Salvador, Litoral Sul, Costa do Discovery and the Far South. Entry is free.

The action is part of Indigenous Crafts April, in the month that celebrates the Day of Original Peoples,

As a cultural attraction, the Fair will feature an indigenous artist Akuã Pataxó on Friday and Beatriz Tuxá on Saturday at 5pm. During the three days of the event, the program continues with Indigenous Songs and Rituals, in the external area of ​​the Museum, exhibition of videos from the series “Who does it?”, with testimonies from artisans and artisans, and images in the Museum’s Living Space.

In the traditional and contemporary compositions of their products, indigenous artisans use native raw materials, such as seeds and coconuts, feathers from domestic animals, natural fibers from vines, piassava, licuri palm, wood and clay. Among the products that will be sold at the Fair are wood carvings and paintings, braided and woven aiós, carved wooden utilitarian items, traditional Kiriri pottery, maracas, bows and arrows, whistles and necklaces.

In addition to being able to buy products directly from the hands of indigenous artisans, the Fair will be an opportunity to learn about the diversity of techniques used and the identity of each ethnic group.

“The special edition of the Bahia Crafts Fair pays homage to indigenous peoples and all their diversity. They are beautiful handcrafted squares that express the beauty of indigenous crafts. In addition, we will deliver dozens of National Artisan and Artisan Cards”, explains Weslen Moreira, coordinator of Promotion of Crafts.
