According to Evandro Accadrolli, coordinator of the Education Workers Union of Santa Catarina (Sinte), in total, among teachers and professionals in administrative sectors, there are 43,766 contracted workers, who serve more than half a million students. Of these workers, around 32 thousand are employed on a temporary basis, known as ACTs.

He points out that, with this type of contract, educators work from February to December and remain unemployed for two to three years due to the lack of a public examination or a call for those who passed the test.

— The last public competition that called for education workers was in 2004. The competition was held in 2017, but as the pandemic period began shortly after, it ended up calling very few workers. So, it was not considered a public contest that invited people — he highlights.

Number of strikers may increase

In the Joinville region, 260 education professionals joined the mobilization. In Criciúma, the number was 250. The Blumenau and Florianópolis regions did not disclose the numbers.

With just over 5 thousand workers on strike across the state, the union’s expectation is that this number will increase from this Wednesday.

Teachers and other education professionals who work in the State demand a new public competition, unpacking of the table (requesting that there no longer be equal salaries for different career positions and demanding gains as the worker advances with their training or time in public service) and appreciation career development, in addition to more investments in education and the structure of schools.
