Work on the new radiotherapy park at the Oncology Research Center (Cepon), in Florianópolis, is at an advanced stage. The project aims to expand cancer treatment capacity in the region. The construction is being made possible by the State Department of Health (SES), the Hemosc/Cepon Support Foundation (FAHECE) and the National Oncological Care Support Program (Pronon).

“Our objective is to comply with legislation so that all patients in Santa Catarina begin their treatment within 60 days. With the completion of the works and the inauguration of the new radiotherapy park, a significant impact is expected on the quality and accessibility of cancer treatment services offered by Cepon, directly benefiting patients and their families”, declares the Secretary of State for Health , Carmen Zanotto.

The investment covers the construction of a new bunker, intended for the installation of the linear accelerator, known as VitalBeam, in addition to four more offices. The new radiotherapy park is expected to open in 2024.

The highlight of the new linear accelerator is its ability to perform radiotherapy sessions more quickly, reducing the risk of side effects and toxicity in patients. Furthermore, the equipment allows the use of different treatment techniques and pre-treatment image verification through Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), ensuring a more precise and effective approach.

Currently, Cepon already operates with two radiotherapy equipment, carrying out approximately 1,900 sessions per month. With the incorporation of the new linear accelerator, it is expected to increase treatment capacity, and also reduce waiting times for patients who need to start radiotherapy.

In the period from January to March 2024, Cepon has already registered a total of 5,955 radiological procedures, highlighting the importance of expanding its resources to meet the growing demands for oncological treatment in the state. The result represents an increase of 5.24% compared to the same period in 2023.
