After the solar eclipse and the passage of the Devil’s Comet, curious eyes once again turn to the sky. It is the moon that draws attention on Tuesday night (23) in the phenomenon called “Full Pink Moon”, visible throughout Brazil.

The name of the full moon in April was given by the native peoples of the Northern Hemisphere, who related the time of year to the blooming of flowers due to the beginning of spring in that part of the planet. Some of these flowers were pink in color and, therefore, gave the name to the phenomenon.
However, despite its name, the natural satellite will not change color this Tuesday. To see the phenomenon, simply observe the sky, without any equipment, at around 5:30 pm, when the moon should appear on the horizon.
“Supermoons” of 2024
This Tuesday’s event will not be a “supermoon”, which occurs when the full moon occurs close to perigee, that is, when it is closest to Earth. This movement results in a full moon that is about 14% larger and 30% brighter than at its apogee, when it is furthest away.

Therefore, not every full moon is a “supermoon”, as this phenomenon depends on the specific phase in which it is complete to occur at the moment of closest approach.

This year, there will be two “supermoons”, according to the astronomical calendar of the Valongo Observatory at UFRJ, one between the 17th and 18th of September, and the other on the 17th of October.
