A man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for killing another man by asphyxiation and hiding his body in Galvão, in the west of Santa Catarina. According to the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina (MPSC), the crime occurred in October 2022 and involved the participation of a teenager. The victim’s body was never found.
The Sentencing Council accepted the MPSC’s thesis and convicted the defendant of qualified homicide (futile motive and use of asphyxiation) and of concealment of a corpse. Prosecutor Juliana Goulart Ferreira represented the MPSC at the session, which took place last Wednesday (17).
According to the complaint, in the early hours of October 6, 2022, the defendant was at his ex-partner’s house alone with her teenage daughter. On that occasion, the victim went to the house and said she would tell the defendant’s ex-wife that he had a relationship with the teenager.
At that moment, attacks occurred between the three. The teenager hit the man with a broom and the defendant squeezed his neck until he died. After that, he wrapped the body in a sheet and, with the help of the teenager, placed the body inside his ex-partner’s car and took it to an unknown location. The body was never located.
The defense can still appeal the decision, but the court denied the defendant the right to appeal freely and he remains in pre-trial detention. The teenager served a socio-educational internment order for almost six months, but is now on assisted release.
