Education highlights the registration of more than 181 thousand students from Tocantins in the National Mathematics Olympiad

The Organizing Committee of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (Obmep) released the registration numbers and records for 2024. This year, the Olympiad reached the largest number of schools, there are 56,513 institutions distributed in 5,564 municipalities, a representation of 99, 9% of Brazilian municipalities, only four of which do not have participating schools and there are more than 18.3 million students enrolled. Tocantins also grew, this year, there are 181,624 registered, 356 more than the previous year and there are 722 participating educational institutions. In the state network we have 412 registered schools and a total of 138,448 students.

The 1st phase test will be on June 4th and participating students can access study material, such as the tests from past editions, on the portal https://www.obmep.org.br/to start preparing. The 2nd phase test will be on October 19th, at the application centers.

The Olympiad is held with students enrolled in public and private schools from the 6th year of elementary school to high school. And it is an achievement of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa).

In 2024, Obmep will distribute 8,450 medals, 650 gold, 1,950 silver and 5,850 bronze, in addition to 51,000 honorable mention certificates. And 20.5 state medals will be awarded, with the aim of increasingly encouraging student participation.

The regional coordinator of Obmep in the Araguaína region, professor Wiliam Carlos de Sousa Luz, highlighted the importance of the Olympics. “We are pleased that after 20 years of starting Obmep, the project continues to be well accepted and has found room for growth, thanks to the good work carried out by schools and teachers”, he explained.

Professor Erivaldo Sousa, representative of Obmep, at the State Department of Education, explained that Seduc always motivates educational institutions and students to participate in school Olympics. “The Olympiad brings a series of significant advantages to students and contributes to personal and academic development, providing a challenging environment that motivates students to deepen their mathematical knowledge. The challenge of solving complex problems stimulates critical thinking, creativity and logical reasoning. Furthermore, it contributes to promoting a culture of study and academic excellence in Brazilian public schools”, highlighted Erivaldo.
