The restructuring of the palm oil production chain, the strengthening of this culture in Bahia and the construction of a Safeguard Plan for the Baianas of Acarajé were the subject of an intersectoral meeting held this Tuesday (23) at the Secretariat of Labor, Employment, Income and Sports (Setre), with the participation of representatives from the Association of Baianas de Acarajé, Mingau and Receptivos (ABAM), the Federal University of Bahia (UFBa) and the Secretariats of Agriculture (Seagri), Culture (Secult) Rural Development (SDR) and for the Promotion of Racial Equality (Sepromi).

During the meeting, experts outlined the current panorama, observing the complexity that involves the palm oil production chain, from the agricultural, economic and cultural processes. At the meeting, guidelines were defined aiming at the construction of a public policy to benefit palm oil cultivation in the state, which is the largest consumer of the product in the country, but only accounts for 2% of national production.

Also under debate are necessary measures to safeguard the craft of Bahian acarajé, recognized as intangible heritage since 2005. According to a survey by the Institute of Artistic and Cultural Heritage (IPAC), linked to Secult, 42 of the 417 municipalities in the state have Bahian acarajé acarajé registered. Setre confirmed its commitment to offering vacancies for Bahian acarajé women in the 2024 stage of the Qualifica Bahia Program, which will be launched in May, in addition to offering standardized equipment for these professionals.

At the end of May, the group will meet again to present the results of the first referrals. The meeting was attended by Setre secretary, Davidson Magalhães; the secretary of Sepromi, Ângela Guimarães; the Superintendent of Sepromi, Mercia Porto; the ABAM coordinator; Rita Santos; the director of Intangible Heritage at IPAC, Adriana Cerqueira: the technical advisor from the Seagri office, Carlito Nunes; by UFBa professor, Alcides Caldas, among others.
