The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) predicts that, between this Wednesday (24) and Saturday (27), a mass of hot and dry air will reach areas in the Central-West, Southeast and South regions of Brazil. In Mato Grosso do Sul, maximum temperatures can exceed 36°C.ebc.gif?id=1591797&o=node

However, Inmet explains that rising temperatures do not yet characterize a new heat wave, like those that occurred in 2023 and in the first quarter of this year. To be classified as a heat wave, maximum temperatures must be 5ºC above the monthly average for a period of at least two to three consecutive days, in a given area of coverage.

From Sunday (28), the forecast is that the highest temperatures will be concentrated in Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and Paraná, but will decrease in the rest of the country.

Alerts

Inmet issued a yellow warning of potential danger due to low relative humidity, until 6 pm this Tuesday (23), in areas of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and São Paulo. In these locations, air humidity can drop to 20%. The institute’s instructions to residents of these locations are to drink plenty of fluids; avoid physical wear and tear during the driest hours and avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day.

In relation to the accumulated rainfall, Inmet also issued a yellow warning of potential danger until 10 am this Wednesday (24) for the southern region of the country. The total volume of rain can reach 50 millimeters (mm), with intense winds, of 40 to 60 km/h, and hail in areas of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná. There is still a low risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling tree branches and flooding.

Two other yellow warnings of potential danger, relating to storms, were issued and are in force until 10 am this Wednesday. The first of them is aimed at residents of areas of Bahia and Sergipe. The second alert is for the rains that will fall in part of the states in the North and Northeast regions, between areas of Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Northwest of Bahia, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Rondônia and throughout Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Amapá, Maranhão and Ceará. The total volume of rain can reach 50 millimeters (mm) in 24 hours, with winds of up to 60 km/h.

In case of gusts of wind, citizens should not take shelter under trees, as there is a risk of falling and electrical discharges. Vehicles should not be parked close to transmission towers and advertising signs, as strong winds pose a risk of overturning these installations. During storms, electronic devices must be unplugged.

Due to the uncertainties and updates of the various numerical weather forecast models, Inmet highlights the importance of following weather forecast updates and special meteorological warnings in the site and on social media.

In case of emergencies, the advice is to seek more information from the local Civil Defense, by calling 199, and from the Military Fire Department, on number 193, to request rescue operations.
