At the event, it was revealed that the estimated annual demand from the state’s domestic market could reach up to 250 thousand tons, when it comes to corn and soybean meal. The information was provided by Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros researcher, Antônio Santiago, who is part of the Grains Commission of the State of Alagoas and presented an overview of the sector during the technical meeting. According to him, according to the National Supply Company (Conab), in the 22/23 harvest Alagoas had a production of 145 thousand tons of corn and 19.1 thousand tons of soybeans. Santiago pointed out that there is room for Alagoas to grow and be able to serve both the domestic and foreign markets, but that there is dependence on favorable weather conditions during the agricultural year. “Our production is insufficient to meet our domestic market, not only for corn and soybeans, but also for rice and beans. We have technologies available to serve the productive areas in the regions, with the use of improved seeds, soil management with direct planting, fertilization and everything that can give us high productivity results in the field”, explains the researcher. The event took place at the headquarters of Sebrae Alagoas, in Arapiraca, and brought together rural producers, technicians, financial institutions and researchers. Seagri’s executive secretary for Agricultural Policies, Aline Melo, participated in the initiative and explained that the objective of the meeting was to bring the production chain closer together, listening to producers’ demands and understanding the points necessary to increase grain production in Alagoas. “We have open dialogue with all agricultural sectors in the state. The grain production sector is one of the most important in local agribusiness because it mainly serves livestock in Alagoas, in animal feed. Moments like this where we can come together and discuss how to continue moving forward are important. Other meetings will be held”, highlighted Aline Melo. Also present were the superintendent of Agricultural Development of the Agriculture department, Ademilson Neris; the manager of Strengthening Production Chains at Seagri, Juliane Viapiana, the Embrapa researcher Anderson Marafon, the president of the Alagoas Grains Commission, Hibernon Cavalcante, technicians from Emater Alagoas, the Federal Institute of Alagoas (IFAL), representative of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Banco do Nordeste and producers in the region.
